An American Astronaut in London
Stolenspace Gallery / London / May 2016
For my first solo show in the UK, I created a body of new work which all take place in a version of London left seemingly abandoned in the mid 90's, covered in graffiti, and sprinkled with band posters from prominent British bands of 20 years ago. I enjoyed playing with the concept of time in this series. It’s deliberately unclear if this version of London has been mysteriously abandoned for two decades, or if this is some alternate world where 90’s British culture has become oddly eternal. For me, as an American, it allowed me to think back to a time when I was a young artist and still figuring out who I was, and what I wanted to make paintings of. I was very influenced by British music and culture when I was a student in the 90’s, and this series allowed me to revisit that time in my past. And to finally full fill my lifelong goal of making a painting of the Spice Girls. If you'd like to know a bit more about this show, you can read a short interview I did at the time with the folks at StolenSpace.
